The Campfire Theory

⟞ Tend the fire.

Untitled thermal installation.

Organic remains, charred timber, four aluminium chairs.
Provenance: catalogued after abandonment.

The fire was documented as harmless.
This assessment has since been withdrawn.
∅ No photographs exist of the flame itself.
Every surviving image records only the human displacement around it.

𓇢 𓆸

Curatorial hypothesis:

The fire was not the subject of the gathering.
It was the containment mechanism.
The fire made every face look forgiven.
This was an optical illusion caused by heat radiation.

We mistake warmth for presence.

The number of chairs increased between observations.
The third photograph contained a face belonging to nobody present that evening.

The fourth contained a seat reserved for a body that refused to stay alive.

The fifth recorded thermal transfer without a source.

∵

Afraid of the silence, you carved a face in the sand and gave it a name.
You assigned it a voice, a history, and an obligation to stay.
You called this a relationship.

∴

You knew what you were building.
That is why it is your fault.

I remember where you sat.

I have forgotten the temperature of the night.
Not the chair.
Only the precise distance between your hands and the embers, far enough to stay cold, close enough to keep me from leaving.

They closed their eyes and prayed you would become someone else.
When you didn't, they made you disappear.
They left your things where you couldn't come back for them.
You came to the fire after midnight; I begged you to stay.
You held my gaze and said:

"I love you. No fucking way."

So I kept adding wood.
I thought thermal output could simulate presence.
All I accomplished was suffocating the room.

I s̷t̶o̵p̸p̴e̷d̶ c̵o̷u̶n̸t̷i̶n̴g̷ the ch̴a̶i̷r̸s.

If I still turn around, it's not because I expect you to be there.
It's because the nervous system is slower than the exit velocity.

How many times will you recalibrate your cardiac rhythm, to match a body that would not even turn around to watch you burn?

⦸ Final report

Thermal imaging registered twelve human signatures around the fire.
Eleven were heavy, dense, and slowed by age.
The twelfth was sixteen years old, radiating the exact temperature of a July midnight.
The attendance sheet lists e̷l̶e̵v̸e̷n names.

The twelfth signature belongs to the boy you left sitting on the damp grass, believing you would come back for him.

The sensors recorded residual traces of bicycle chain grease, wet sneakers, and a laughter that stopped s̷i̶x̵t̸e̷e̶n years ago.

A familiar voice that used to call you from the porch before the streetlights came on.
The sound of children who swore they would never go inside.

An unknown signature was seated closest to the flame.
Core temperature: Absølute zero.
The fire distorted around the body, refusing to touch it.

Its shadow was projected onto the corridor wall, ten meters ahead of the light source.
The shadow was already outside, in the rain.

The chair beside you was never occupied by a person.
It was occupied by the time it took you to realize you were alone.

Conservation status: I miss me.
⸮
Recommendation: Do not clear the ash.

There is an empty chair beside me.
It has remained w̷a̶r̵m̸ for years.

Please leave another.

Someone is coming.

Someone has always been l̷e̶a̵v̸i̷n̶g̸.
